After a seven month trip abroad to Guatemala and Spain, I have returned to Portland and am available for freelance assignments. I can be contacted at mollyjsmith1 [a] gmail.com.
After graduating from The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University in 2013, I was selected for a two-week student journalism institute with The New York Times. Following that, I interned with The Oregonian and The Jersey Journal before traveling to Southeast Asia in the summer of 2014 to work as a photographer for outdoor education and travel company Rustic Pathways. Upon returning to the United States, I knew it was time for a new adventure. I left my home in Arizona to make my way back to the Pacific Northwest, a region I fell in love with while interning at The Oregonian in 2013.
I have been fortunate to photograph assignments from the London Olympics to immigration issues in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, and I have traveled to Southeast Asia and Australia to work as a photographer for Rustic Pathways -- but I've learned that often the best stories are in our own backyards. My favorite assignments have had me paddling 30 miles down the Willamette River, camping under the stars or even crawling into rat-infest attics, all in the name of a good image. I recently spent two and a half years as a staff photographer for the Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore., pursuing these stories and more.
